Ciao, DDoS. Hello Stability! How StormWall Protected Limitis, an Italian IT Provider
Companies worldwide rely on StormWall to secure their digital infrastructure. But some of the most interesting security stories have the most unexpected beginnings.
Take Limitis, an IT provider based in South Tyrol. Their journey with StormWall didn’t start with a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate, but rather with a group of curious teenagers experimenting with DDoS tools they found on the dark web. But let’s start at the beginning.
Customer: Limitis
Limitis is a South Tyrolean IT service provider with over 20 years of experience in the online business. It supports approximately 5,000 customers and partners with solutions in housing, hosting, and digital infrastructure. Its server infrastructure is designed to deliver maximum uptime, robust data security, and high performance.
With around 200 servers in its own data center, Limitis manages a broad range of critical systems, including webshops, applications, and email services. This makes network stability a top priority, as even a brief outage can lead to significant financial losses for both Limitis and its customers, along with potential damage to its reputation. In the worst-case scenario, a prolonged outage could even jeopardize the company’s future.
Business Challenge: From Homework to Network Havoc
The first significant attacks on Limitis hit in the fall of 2016. At that time, the company was managing a digital class register used by all schools in South Tyrol. A group of students, after learning about DDoS techniques on the dark web, launched an attack on this critical system, causing severe disruptions that lasted for several days.
These attacks included volume-based floods that targeted network bandwidth, protocol-level attacks aimed at firewalls and routers, and application-layer attacks that overloaded web servers.
“In the beginning, we tried to manage the situation with internal measures like firewall rules, traffic shaping, and IP blacklisting. But these were just temporary fixes—not a sustainable solution. Manual responses were too slow and ineffective.”
— Philipp Moser, CEO Limitis
This incident was a turning point for Limitis, pushing the company to invest in a professional, no-compromise DDoS protection solution.
Solution: Professional-Grade Protection with StormWall
After evaluating various options, Limitis chose StormWall’s DDoS Network Protection. The key deciding factors included:
Specialized focus on DDoS mitigation
The ability to automatically detect and counter complex attack vectors
High transparency in traffic analysis
“The platform detects attacks early and accurately, filters them without any noticeable performance impact for our users, and reliably protects our server infrastructure. This has given us a whole new level of peace of mind and planning security,” says Philipp Moser, CEO Limitis.
Deployment: Fast, Professional, and Thorough
Limitis implemented StormWall’s services back in 2017. A major challenge was fine-tuning configurations for each client server. This required close, three-way collaboration: Limitis engineers worked alongside customers to diagnose issues, while StormWall experts provided the final technical solutions.
Despite the complexity, the integration process was smooth, well-structured, and professionally supported on both sides. “Traffic redirection and BGP integration were very well documented. The entire process—from planning to full deployment—took about two months,” recalls the CEO of Limitis.
Results: The Calm After the Storm(Wall)
With StormWall’s protection in place, Limitis has achieved its main goal: preventing service outages due to DDoS attacks. This has been particularly valuable for clients in sectors like e-commerce and public services, where uninterrupted access is critical.
It’s also become a key selling point. Customers who know their infrastructure is secure are quicker to trust Limitis with their digital operations, leading to stronger, longer-lasting business relationships.
“StormWall protects our servers from attacks before our customers even notice. This level of security is worth its weight in gold—both technically and from a business perspective. The solution is stable, powerful, and doesn’t add significant overhead. But what really stands out is the fast, professional response of their support team. For companies with business-critical online infrastructure, StormWall is a reliable partner with a clear focus. The speed and precision of their response is impressive,” says Philipp Moser, CEO Limitis.
