Game On, Attacks Off: How We Secured Rokogame Studios from DDoS
Many of StormWall’s clients come from the gaming industry. As game developers face an increasing number of DDoS attacks, specialized protection is no longer optional—it’s essential.
At the same time, more and more gaming companies are choosing StormWall as their go-to DDoS protection provider. So why StormWall? Let’s explore the Rokogame Studios case to find out.
Customer: Rokogame Studios
Rokogame Studios is a team of passionate gamers committed to shaping the future of the gaming industry. Based in Turkey and home to over 100 employees, the company creates exciting, competitive games across multiple platforms.
They are the creators of Rise Online World—the only MMORPG built on Unreal Engine that supports a record-breaking number of players on a single map. Constantly pushing the limits of what’s possible in gaming, Rokogame Studios continues to grow by embracing innovation and cutting-edge technologies, attracting hundreds of new players every day.
Business Challenge: MMORPGs Under DDoS Fire
Rokogame Studios’ player base spans continents—from neighboring regions to as far as Peru. Delivering a smooth and uninterrupted gaming experience to every player, regardless of their location, is one of the studio’s top priorities.
However, frequent in-game disruptions can seriously impact the user experience—and one of the main culprits behind these issues is DDoS attacks. According to our data, hackers are increasingly targeting the gaming and entertainment sectors. In fact, in 2024, the number of DDoS attacks in this space surged by 86% compared to the previous year.
MMORPGs are especially vulnerable, and one of the biggest challenges in defending against DDoS attacks is accurately distinguishing between real player activity and malicious traffic—a task that many developers still struggle with.
Solution: StormWall Joins the Game
“Many companies—even major cloud providers—can protect basic protocols like HTTP and HTTPS, but they often fall short when it comes to defending against attacks on TCP and UDP. Since our game runs entirely on these protocols, we’ve become a frequent target”
Serhat Esmer, Sr. Network Engineer at Rokogame Studios
Rokogame Studios has a skilled and experienced network team, but network security isn’t their core focus. On top of that, implementing advanced DDoS protection—including licenses, high-capacity network ports, and partnerships with Internet Exchange (IX) providers—requires significant financial investment.
Given these challenges, the best solution for Rokogame Studios was to partner with a provider that could deliver powerful, reliable filtering of malicious traffic at every level of a potential DDoS attack. That’s when the company began searching for the most effective option on the market. After testing multiple solutions, they found their answer in StormWall.
“We faced attacks on both our websites and tried many solutions. We even installed a physical device from a well-known brand in our cabinet. However, when it came to Layer 7 protection, StormWall provided the best protection at the lowest cost,” says Serhat Esmer.
Deployment: Precision Filtering, Zero Downtimе
The company implemented a combination of two StormWall solutions—website DDoS protection and network DDoS protection.Along with effective filtering of malicious traffic at both the application and network levels, the team also valued StormWall’s responsive customer service and the availability of all essential peering and IX connections.
But the key factor in their decision was the false positive rate. During testing, only StormWall was able to accurately distinguish real player traffic from attack traffic—with near-perfect accuracy.
“Even some of the best-known providers, whose licenses cost thousands of dollars, couldn’t deliver the same results—even after setting up demo equipment in our infrastructure,” explains Serhat Esmer.
The first time StormWall was activated, Rokogame Studios was already under a DDoS attack. The team initially set up the connection via GRE tunneling, and later established a direct cable link to StormWall’s point of presence (POP) in Sofia.
“The setup was so fast it was barely noticeable. Any small issues were resolved immediately thanks to quick and effective communication,” Serhat Esmer adds.
Results: Keeping Gamers in the Game
According to the Rokogame Studios team, StormWall stands out as one of the most effective solutions for defending against TCP/UDP attacks. Since integrating the service, the company hasn’t experienced a single game disruption caused by a DDoS attack.
“StormWall is a perfect match for gaming companies like ours,” says Serhat Esmer. “Their team offers dedicated support at every stage, and they easily block attacks that even major companies struggle to stop. While our players enjoy uninterrupted gameplay, we wouldn’t even know there was a threat—if not for the detailed email reports from StormWall about the attacks they’ve successfully blocked.”
